Accidents and Incidents

From the Fishing News of Friday 12th June 1981:

    .............

One local inshore boat owner who feels threatened at the arrival of the big trawlers from Spain is Willie Thomas, who built and owns the the three-year-old 40ft. steel stern trawler Blaidd (M5).

"I've got a fishing vessel and I stand to lose my business due to foreign ships coming in," he told Fishing News.

They have "not harmed us yet.  We will find difficulties when they get underway.  Buying power is not there to take this fish.  We've got difficulties shifting the amount landed at present.

"There are three ships this week - there could be three more next week.  I'm very, very concerned."

Firemen help avert sinking

Firemen and crew helped save a trawler from sinking in Milford Dock on Saturday evening.  Two fire appliances from the town were called to the dock when the 42-foot-long vessel, Blaidd, started taking in water through a valve in the engine room and was in danger of sinking.  Water began to flood the engine and fish room and the trawler was supported by a dock crane until the danger was averted.
