Accidents and Incidents:

From the West Wales Guardian of Friday 22nd August 1958:

 

    New names appropriate to Milford Haven are to be given to three recently acquired trawlers now fishing from the port.  Mr. E. E. Carter's company will rename their vessels Star of the East and Star of the South to Milford Star and Haven Star.

    Milford Steam Trawling Company have given notice of their intention to rename the ex-Fleetwood oil burner Admiral Sir John Lawford to Milford Admiral.

From the West Wales Guardian of Friday 7th August 1959:

 

    Whilst fishing in thick haze off Tolsta Head in the Minches, between the West Coast of Scotland and the Hebrides, the trawler Haven Star was stopped by the Fisheries Protection vessel Nina for alleged fishing inside the three mile limit. The trawler was escorted into the nearest port, Stornaway, and the skipper, bluff Mr. Gordon ("Tamo") Allerton, of 26 Coombs Drive, went ashore to make a statement. 

    Skipper Allerton stated, when the trawler docked on Wednesday, "My position was fixed by readings on the Decca Navigator, which showed I was just outside the limit."

    The vessel is owned by Westward Trawlers Ltd.

From the West Wales Guardian  of Friday 22nd December 1961:

 

At Sea Over Christmas

 

    Only one Milford Haven trawler, Messrs. Carter's Haven Star, will be at sea over Christmas.

    In charge of Skipper Hubert Morgans, the ship sailed on Tuesday, taking with her a turkey and all the other Christmas trimmings to ensure that her crew of eleven will have their Christmas cheer in the fishing grounds off the west coast of Scotland.  Although they will not be at home for Christmas Skipper Morgans and his crew expect to dock again in time to see the New Year in!

Trawler's dash to port

Deckhand Injured in Fishing Accident

 

    The Milford Haven sister trawlers, the Haven Star and Milford Star, both dashed into Stornaway in the outer Hebrides last Thursday to land one injured and one sick man.

    The "Haven Star"', in charge of skipper Hubert Morgans, was fishing in the grounds off the West Coast of Scotland when 45 year old Deckhand Joe Vlietstra, 20, Waterloo Road, Hakin, caught his left hand and arm in the trawling gear and was severely crushed. As soon as the accident happened skipper Morgans made for the nearest port, Stornoway, in the Isle of Lewis.

    Mr Vlietstra was taken ashore to hospital and was operated on. His condition when the trawler left Stornoway, was "Fair"" and he was expected to remain in hospital for ten or twelve days.

    Skipper Morgans commented, "Every one in Stornoway was very helpful and the hospital is a very well equipped, modern place. His arm was pretty badly injured and we knew as soon as the accident happened that he needed hospital attention."

    Mr Vlietstra had not been going to sea for a couple of years and joined the "Haven Star" only that trip.

From the West Wales Guardian of Friday 12th January 1962:

 

    We understand that the trawler Haven Star is likely to be scrapped at the end of her present trip, and replaced by the trawler Almandine, which has been purchased by Westward Trawlers from Milford Fisheries Ltd.  The principal of Westward Trawlers was Mr. E. E. Carter, M.M., whose sudden death we reported last week.

    It is understood that the company's other vessel, the Milford Star, will continue to operate.
