 Accidents and Incidents

From the Haverfordwest & Milford Haven Telegraph of Wednesday 29th August 1900:

In the early hours of Thursday morning last, an explosion occurred on board the steam trawler "Hene Castle", lying in the dry dock, Milford.  It appeared that a lad named Lumsdaine, residing in Great North Road, was engaged on board the vessel in assisting to clean the boilers, when he removed the lid of the coal bunkers to look for a shovel, having in his hand at the time a lamp.  The was the means of causing a terrific explosion and the unfortunate lad was burnt in a shocking manner about the legs and lower body.

The report brought PC Rigby, of the Dock Police, and PC John Griffiths to the scene, and they immediately conveyed Lumsdaine to Doctor Griffiths, and subsequently to his home.  Although for some days the lad's life was in danger, there are now hopes that he may recover.

A good deal of damage was also caused to the "Hene Castle".
